Alepth One sound errer

I honestly don't know of a better place to post this. Haven't played Marathon since I upgraded quicktime and macromedia flash to their respective latest versions, playing in an OS X 10.0.3 machine with all current updates.
On opening a clean install of Aleph One from source.bungie.org I get the following error message:
"Aleph One couldn't initialize the sound.
Error ID: -2004"
Followed by a silent blank screen. I wait an hour, nothing happens, and the only way I can get back to the desktop is by blindly force-quitting the the application.
Any idea what I'm running into here?
