It's worth searching for a copy of Oni for PC, I found it to be the most addictive 3rd person game - best control system which other games surprisingly haven't copied.

Oni doesn't really fit into the other Bungie games so well - I've never compared the dates, I'm sure they fit in fine with Marathon or Halo, but the world seems to be a bit of a once-off. This is all from memory of 2 years ago, so I may get some things wrong.
Most of the cities are habitats protected by giant shields, as something went wrong in the past which made the atmosphere and world harsh and close to uninhabitable.
You play Konoko (the greatest female lead character in a game) who, as part of an military project un-beknownst to her, has a symbiot life form implanted in her when she was young. This symbiot gives Konoko super-human abilities etc, and more importantly to the story, the ability to withstand great amounts of damage.
The story sees an evil-doer who wants to take over the world, destroy human population etc. It turns out that the symbiot helps a person survive the atmosphere outside the habitats. So the game ends with the habitats being destroyed, and all surviving humans requiring the symbiot implanted in them to live.
Really bad plot synopsis, and I realised as I was typing, how much more there is to the story then I originally gave credit for - I am sure I have missed important bits etc. But the point is, the game ends with any surviving humans requiring the symbiot to live - ie. all humanity becoming super-human - doesn't really fit Marathon/Halo.
