In Response To: PF Volunteers - Canterbury Barred (Steve Levinson)

: The only PB is at the end, and the fighting can be quite brutal, and
: not all that much fun. Chances are you will be watching the final battle
: between the golden hunter and the aliens over and over again, and
: receiving his gift, regardless of whether or not he survives, many, many
: times.

Yes, I agree. This level is not my favorite either. Fortunately, it's a fairly short level, at least the hard parts are.

: Assuming you actually want to play this level - and there is a cool room that
: is worth visiting - there are a variety of strategies that can be used.

My strategy is somewhat like Steve's. I stand with my back facing the poly that activates the doors that the projectile fighters are behind. I then activate those doors, wait a split second until the enemies see me, and then head back out toward the oval room. In my experience, all the enemies come out with the fighters. Instead of jumping down into the oval immediately, I will slowly back my way around the raised walkway until most of the enemies are in the doorway or strung out along the walkway. Of course, they are all firing at the same time, so you have to keep moving to avoid their fire. But frequently the Trooper grenades will strike the other enemies and eventually berserk one of the other Troopers. At some point I will jump down into the oval room and fight whatever comes down with me. You have to be careful because some enemies will also ride the elevator down and creep up from behind. This strategy does not work all the time, but I was able to vid the level using it.

: Even at this distance you can tab the door and it will raise to
: reveal a switch

Arrrrrg! I wish I had known that before now. I know I tried opening it that way before, but I must have been too far away to activate it. I never tried it again. I thought the only way to activate it was on the other side of the wall, where the panel is easily accessible. I've been doing that all this time. Tab the panel on the other side, run around and shoot the switch before the panel comes back down, run back around to tab the panel again, and then run back around to shoot the switch a second time.

: Exercise
: caution as you enter this room - invisible compilers will appear and if
: you're too fast, you may find yourself between them.

You can also wait for them right outside the opening to the catwalk. If you time it right, you can stand in that narrow opening and stand-punch them.
