: No luck: A1/Win32 sees the data files, and the level skip function lists all
: ten maps, but A1 quits to the desktop when I try to start a game.
That seems to be the problem that a lot of people are having.
: On the other hand, it did that before, so it's probably not the add-on's
: fault.
Well, that's good to know... maybe. Does that mean that AO for Windows is just unstable and there's nothing to do about it but wait till the next update?
: Does it absolutely need those friggin' MML additions and external textures?
Yes. For one, without the MML the weapons display would be totally fucked and where you now see, for example, the Pfhorstaff, you'd see some misaligned HUD image or another and the words "WSTE-M5 Combat Shotgun" somewhere in there. The MML does what one once would have done in ResEdit for older scenarios. It's also what makes the new interface rects be where they are, amongst a large variety of other little things.
And the texture replacement is neccessary because Marathon's texture CLUTs are extremely limited and can't handle the color variety in Eternal. It needs to run in true color. You could disable the whole section out of the MML file and get rid of the texture replacement and it would still run, it would just be ugly as ass.
Speaking of which - are you running in OpenGL mode or no?
