Indeed. Some of these decisions were based on "getting back to our roots." 2 color multiplayer change colors was definately a nod to the Mark IV. Player emblems linked with your two player colors was a re-introduction from Myth and Bungie.net.
Now, look very closely at the Spartan in this picture...
