: Best Mac: 366MHz G3, 8MB VRAM
: Worst Mac: 225MHz 604e, 2MB VRAM

: Although, there must be some way to make Aleph One draw faster.

: Using Windows Calculator, 64x64 WU is 90.51 diagonal

Though you'd have to be looking far-corner to far-corner to get that view, and normally you're more in the center of the map. From the "top" of the level, where most of these shots are taken from, the longest view is about 45WU (to one of the far corners).

: which is 725 Dark
: Forces Units. The official limit for is 200 DFU for DOS DF and 500 DFU for
: Mac DF, but I know DOS version has been stretched to 500, and it's been
: determined that the limit is much higher for 3DO scenery than for regular
: level geometry.

What does Dark Forces have to do with this at all? I'm lost now...

: The point is, it's a long view, but not G4 long.

It's not so much the length of the view, but how many polygon edges are in the view. I can look clear across the map on some of the more flat areas fine, but running around in the canyons with all those little pillars makes even my machine a little choppy. Although I think Aleph must use some sort of caching scheme, because choppy areas only seem to be choppy once, and then I can look back all I want with no choppiness.

Also, I know this isn't the place for Aleph complaints or wishlists, but it'd be really nice to have some sort of loading screen before levels. Loading 130 512x512 textures takes a good while (again... "even on my machine") longer than the normally near-instant load of a Marathon level, so I'm sitting there staring at a black screen for maybe 10 or to 30 seconds (haven't timed it). Someone might think the game just crashed or something. A load screen there would be appropriate.

(And for those with lower end machines going "OMG WTF MB!?" the game will ship with lores 128x128 textures, with 256 and 512 hires packs available as additional downloads. Just swap out the "Textures" folder with another one. This should also help those poor people still on dialup).
