The world is a very large hollow sphere, with artificial gravity and a habitat on the inner surface. To get in or out, there are tall mountains that reach "in" toward the center of the sphere, "above" the atmosphere into vacuum; these mountains have holes in their centers leading "down", "out" of the sphere. (Holes into space basically; hence why they have to be above the atmosphere). You are on the top of one such mountain (though due to engine limitations the scale of the hole is rather off; there are some perfectly good excuses why this particular hole may be so small, I'll let you choose any one you like). That's why, if you notice, the sky has continents and large-scale weather formations in it, as seen from "above". : By the way, the
Yeah, compared to the textures everything else is extremely low-res, but that's actually original Marathon resolution stuff. I didn't realize when making the landscapes that even the high-res (custom clut) landscapes don't show up full-scale in-game, they are something like 2x size. So they got fuzzy.
