In Response To: Re: Yeah! Please post jpgs! (Ernie)

: I flinched at the viewing distance in those screenshots. Either you're using
: very few polys... or your using AO's extended poly limit.

Well, I'm using very few polys for how big an area this covers. The entie 64WUx64WU usable area of the map is one big room, so yes, the viewing distance is insane. That map currently uses about 500 polys.

: heh. I like how
: the sky looks in screencapture 8. I presume you'll be spicing up the
: general look of your structure, yes? It looks very... basic.

I had originally intended to add a lot more polys, to give the place less of a flat feel, more ruggedness, but I decided not to, for the time being at least, for two reasons: 1) Some places slow down even my machine, and I think I'm well above the average Marathoner even though I'm running 3 year old technology (a dual G4 450). And 2) texturing an area that will make Forge - quite literally, mind you - die of violent convulsions while spewing projectile vomit all over my walls, is a real bitch and a half, requiring setting many many lines to be non-transparent, thus dividing the map up into false rooms which can then be properly textured, then setting those lines back to transparent and playtesting to make sure it all looks right... what you see in thse shots is just the result of jut one round of such hog-wrestling, there are still a lot of areas I didn't take shots of which are even more poorly textured. We really need a proper AO-compatible Forge replacement.

When someone manages to make Anvil cooperate long enough to get the rest of that texture set imported (more than just the greys, which are first in the set and the only thing I've managed to import yet), I may go ahead and add some color to it anyway, despite the whole idea of it being a black and white dream, just to make it seem more interesting (also because Dylan has been coloring the other dream levels, so what the hell). And maybe I'll divide it all up some more too, add more polys to things... which will only make it more of a bitch to texture.

But here, someone was just bitching at me on Hotline about how suck Eternal is cause it only has three textures (the three shown in those screenshots, cause THE ENTIRE THING IS MADE OF THE SAME TYPE OF ROCK. IT'S BORING FOR STORY PURPOSES!). So I took some screens of another level that's more interestingly textured. Shot 14 is wrong because the MML was accidentally replacing Human textures with S'pht ones, but hey, now you get to see some more of the S'pht textures (which are the ones in that previous level). Unfortunately that shot was under sewage, so you can't see their true colors.

: All in all, interesting stuff. I never heard anything regarding that M1
: weapon/M2 Enforcer I sent you. Did it work out?

Haven't tried to import it yet. Got lots of other more important things to do first. But thanks!
