In Response To: Re: Pretty pictures! (Lunair)

: Pretty indeed!
: My only two criticisms are of the earthscape: 1) The lens flare. Is this a
: chapter picture (in which case no problem) or a landscape? 'Cos lens
: flares are very direction-dependent, and if the marine can focus on
: different places and the flare is static, the illusion of its reality is
: lost. And also, if it's supposed to be seen with the marine's own eyes,
: why would a lens flare be there in the first place? (Though I admit I am
: reasonably ignorant of the specific mechanism by which lens flares are
: created.)
: 2) Minor nitpick: if the sun is that far away, I would guess that the only
: features visible on the earth would be the crescent of the hemisphere
: that's lit up, but turned away from the viewer. The rest would just be a
: shadow against the stars, no? This is really style, of course.

Good point about lens flares not being visible by human eyes, and moving, too. I just thought it looked unnatrual without any kind of sun in the picture. I suppose from the angle it's lit though, the sun would be almost perpendicular to the picture plane, way off to the left. Maybe I could throw the moon in there somewhere... just the Earth sitting in space seems very unnatural to me.

: Comments: On the nightscape, the water is quite visible, almost
: phosphorescent. Is this intentional? I didn't realize that the nightscape
: was the same terrain as the dayscape until I read the note in your post;
: the night version looks less natural, I think.

No, the water is not supposed to be that bright. I tried to diminish it as much as possible without it looking too artificially darkened. (Nightscape is actually a daylight photograph doctored to look night-like. I don't have a night photo of that location to work from). I chalked it up to intense moonlight from the multiple moons, maybe a bigger, brighter one behind the camera.

: I'm also curious now about that foliage I can see silhouetted against the
: light background on the Pfhor shot. Is it part of the story in any way?

Nope, there were just trees in the foreground of the mountains I wanted to use. This picture actually wound up being very opposite of what I had initially intended for the Pfhor colony - a smoggy cityscape with towering skyscrapers. But the story doesn't really dictate what KIND of colony world it is, so it could be just the big Pfhor structures you're running around in, surrounded by miles of untamed wilderness. As my notes indicated, I'm not sure if that haze is fog or smog (it sure is oddly colored), and whether it's actually nighttime or if there's just thin atmosphere and weird lighting... It just looks very alien and Pfhorish, so I'm happy with that.

: Overall, I like muchly!

Thank you :-)

: And no, I didn't realize that it was Mars. Good job on that, too, even if
: it's unused.

Hopefully someone else can put it to good use sometime...
