It was mostly the names. This guy went by a zillion names and liked to work them in as minor characters in his stories.

Actually, despite being a major asshole, that does sound like something that he would do. He was an awesome writer and a very creative person and liked riddles, puzzles, etc. But that would only work if he somehow became involved somewhere deep in the Bungie community since his disappearance, which doesn't seem very likely.
