In Response To: High res-sprites?, A1 OpenGL w/3dfx card (Siphonopho)

: I didn't feel like starting two different topics, so..

: 1. Most of us (even myself a couple times, before switching to the Voodoo
: graphic card) have seen how pretty high resolution textures look, but
: something always bugged me. This feeling of "bugginess" was
: about how blurry the in-game sprites appear at higher resolutions. What I
: was wondering, was, is it possible to have higher resoultion sprites
: replace the current sprites similarly to the texture enhancements work?

There's no technical obstacle, just the amount of work involved. Which would be significantly greater than that involved in prettying up the 2D textures; there are far more sprites than textures in the game and it would almost certainly involve 3D modeling. Plus, we're pushing the limits of video memory even on high-end computers. It would be better to convert to 3D models, but that would again involve much more work.

: 2. Is there a way to get the OpenGL feature to work with a 3dFX card? I'm not

Sorry, 3Dfx is pretty much dead and so is support for its hardware. You could probably get an older Radeon or Geforce 2/3 for pretty cheap that would run rings around both the Rage Pro and the Voodoo (of course, this depends on what the rest of your computer is like).
