I literally jumped outta my comfy chair when I saw the early prototype of the Pfhor's Probes:
Look at that, now at my Jjaro Defense drones designed for use in the Jjaro Citadels of WMaiD:
Disregard that Rubicon pistol in the image above, however. That was early in WMaiD's design.
By looking forward, I was actually looking back, it seems.
The Pfhor plundered much of their technology from abandoned Jjaro outposts and stations - it makes sense to presume their defense drones had similar origins.
I really love the crisp, clean look of Bungie's production art. That, and seeing the innards of an S'pht without the cloak is also pretty cool.
In regards to an S'pht virus: I'd presume that, like the CDC in the USA, they can keep an viral agent active for long peroids without an host organism.
From my years in biology, I believe it has to do with the thickness of the virii protein coat which allows it to survive in the air or any less hospitable environment.
