There's plenty of health on this level. Those vending machines are 1X shield rechargers! I'm surprised you missed this. If a phone can be a terminal or a pattern buffer, then it makes sense that a little refreshment will recharge your shields.
Although there were a number of inconsistencies here, I generally liked this level - it reminded me of Tempus Irae in its style - a nice change of pace.
