In Response To: Re: RED Volunteers: Medatron of the Void (Dr. John Sumner)

: I agree with Mark and Steve. This was definitely my least favorite level.

I'll wait to call a least favorite level until we finish the scenario, but this one has a good shot at it :P (Another possibility would be the level we'll hit in 2 days, Looking for Floaters).

: At least I did. I mean you have all this hard fighting for
: practically the whole level with NO shield recharger (ok, ok, one
: canister) and after all the fighting THEN you are rewarded with a 1x
: recharger and a 2x recharger several feet from each other. Stupid design
: in my opinion.

Yes, there's far too little health on this level, and far too many places where even the slightest, tiniest misstep or split-second timing error will get you killed. Get hung up on some of the wierder geometry = death. Ambushed by head bots while bouncing on the stairs = death. Banged into a piece of scenery and unable to move = death. Just missed a bot with your opening shot usually = death because they fire so damn much. Taking on more than 1 bot at once usually = death because you rely on "holding them down" with the Mercury, and that can only be done to 1 bot at a time and usually requires that you stand still too.

: By the way, this is the only level ( I believe) where it is virtually
: impossible to collect all the ammo. Once you drop down the first time into
: the labyrinth, there are two avenues you can take. Each path requires you
: drop down again. Along each of these ways, there is a small ammo cache.
: However, it is not possible (without launching yourself back up) to
: collect both caches. Arggg.....I really, really hate that.

I wasn't aware there was any way at all to launch yourself back up. Can the enemies shoot you up? (And, of course, there's only a 1x health canister in the area that you probably already used to recover from the first half of the level...)

Also, this isn't the only level with that problem, as I'm completely at a loss as to how to get the secret weapon on Last Minute Shopping.

: As with Steve, I had to drop back to an easier setting to get to the first
: PB. After that, I went with DW the rest of the way. I simply did not have
: the patience to keep trying to get to that first PB on DW. So Mark, if you
: finished this level completely on DW, then I tip my Marathon hat to you!

I did, but then again I'm a very patient person :P I took it very conservatively, advancing slowly and peeking around corners to shoot bots in the elbow, using the annoying door upstairs, and it still took me many tries, including one where the game froze :/
