Even with the ammo, it was very difficult on deathwish. For me the problem was with patience with that transiently opening door. I just wasn't patient enough to keep working on killing the floaters inside, so I dropped down to Ian's Major Damage and was then able to run through the door and take them out, save my game and revert to Deathwish.
