In Response To: Favorite Marathon (K-chi)

: Hey everyone! I'm new to the forums, although I've been strutting around the
: Story page for research purposes. Anyway, I was just wondering which one
: is your guys' favorite Marathon game? I'm not allowed to vote, as I've
: only played M1, but I'm on the LAST LEVEL. Hee. Then I can move on. I'm
: sure most people will say Marathon Infinity, but I'm curious as to whether
: any of you think the first game is the best.

My favorite is definitely M1. The mood in my opinion was the best. The environment, i'd say, is just as good as in the others. I find M1 somewhat more challenging than the others, there are more puzzles and stuff and mazes. The ambient sounds in M2 and MI in my opinion suck the big ass one, as i've said before they just sound as dull as static to me, pretty much. I think that the background music was more fitting. In the end, I would prefer both, but the ambient sounds need to be more realistic. The plot I like best from M1, it was very strange and mysterious. MI's plot might've been more flowing and frankly more interesting, but it was so confusing, I only understood approximately slightly less than 2/3rds of it.

The problem with the look of the aliens in M1's sequels is that they don't really look like aliens to me. They look more like a bunch of dorky goons in costumes, or they look like they walked out Pokemon. D-M.A. said M1's creatures were childish, but I kind of disagree. They make me feel more like i'm actually fighting a species called the Pfhor, not a bunch of partially replicated versions of cheesy monster cartoon characters or something. It just seemed more realistic. I also think that the weapons in M1 looked better. The ones in M2 and MI look primitive and dull, although then again I think I could recall that they were the UESC-issued weapons replicated by the S'pht. There really weren't any modifications to the weapons, I guess that it was just something to make the weapons fit more into the environment.

Pretty much I think that M1's plot and emotion, in general, were more interesting.

M1 is more like a strange, spooky, mysterious sci-fi. M2 to me is more like a fairy tale told while carrying out Durandal's dirty work. MI, well, I guess Bungie had so much goosebumps with the feeling of letting out all of this 7 prophecy or whatever, but basically I think that they went too far, MI is a big disappointment in my opinion, even more than M2.

I think that the AIs in M1 were more interesting and have a cooler background. Durandal's gone nuts (or as they refer to it in Marathon, rampant), Tycho seems to be just somewhat messed up and gets assimilated, and Leela is severely damaged and is barely able to contain the whole dire situation. I think that's more interesting. In M2 and MI, Durandal isn't all that interesting anymore, he isn't insane, he doesn't have that good old twisted personality I like. He pretty much is just your slave driver, just someone who tells you what's going on and tells you to go through all these missions. Leela I guess was kind of like that, but she had more feel projected with what she said and stuff. I am also kind of disappointed when Leela is no longer around from the beginning of M2 on. It would have been great if she had at least made a surprise return for at least a little bit or something. It's as if she never really had a role in the entire Marathon story. Tycho I guess added some mystery in M1, he is kind of messed up and gets assimilated as I said earlier. In the sequels he is kind of a villain, but doesn't do as good as Durandal did when he was sort of a villain. Like since when does Tycho do stuff like kidnap you (Blaspheme Quarantine)?:

***INCOMING MESSAGE FROM DURANDAL***

Sorry to give you the bad news, but you've been kidnapped.
You aren't where Leela wanted you to go, and you surely won't
get there any time soon.

I was watching what Leela was having you do: 'save the ship,
save humanity!' And just what or who are you saving them
from? And to what end?

How cliché.  You'll find this little visit much more exciting.

I have dev@``~~C#mon#`~ Tyc~~B``ou to play: If you win, you
go free, and we continue our relationship on friendlier terms.
If you lose, you die.

Good luck in our little game.  Unlike Leela, I give no hints.
Do it on your own, or die trying...

Insanely yours,
Durandal
