In Response To: Rubicon AO Help (Wejam The Carter)

: Ok, I'm sorry I haven't been keeping up on these things, but I just
: downloaded Rubicon and rubicon AO light. But I haven't yet figured out how
: the hell I'm supposed run rubicon on OSX with the benifits of Aleph One.
: When I run A1 in the rubicon folder it gives me some crap about the
: shapes, sounds ect. files not being loaded. When I play M? on A1 with the
: rubicon files installed but then the sound doesn't work. I downloaded an
: updater which is supposed to do . . . something but I can't even get that
: to work. I can play Rubicon AO by its self fine, but . . . come on I've
: been hooked on A1 quality graphics I can't go back to M? era graphics.

OK, I'll take this one.

When the AO project started, all apps were classic and resources were stored in the resource fork within the application itself. Under OS X, the resource fork in most applications is actually a separate folder and the application and it's resources are bundled into a package that looks like an app, but is really a folder. OS X lets you look inside packages fairly easily by control clicking on the app, but the whole idea of having to patch AO for each 3rd party scenario every time there is a new build is, well, just not a good idea. Although AO has always supported scripts, it has only been with the release of OS X that scenario makers have gotten serious about releasing their scenario-specific features as a script. Although the Rubicon Team is working on a full release of Rubicon X with new maps and high-res textures, such a release is still months away. I will suggest to Scott that he post a downloadable script that can be used in the meantime with the existing Rubicon version. In the meantime, if you have ResEdit, you can extract the script yourself from the Rubicon AO Lite application. Open the app in ResEdit and open the TEXT resource. Inside you will find four scripts. Open the first of these, copy its contents and paste it into a file named global.txt. Next, copy the contents of each of the other 3 scripts each into its own text file (the name is not important). Place all 4 files inside the Scripts folder in your Rubicon folder, and throw in a copy of the 12/25 build of AO carbon. You'll be good to go.

One important caution - Rubicon used to crash in AO carbon. I know that Mark Levin has fixed these crashes in the current Rubicon X beta build of AO, but not all of his additions have made it into the 12/25 build of AO carbon. I think the bugs that caused these crashes have already been fixed in AO carbon - Mark, can you confirm this? - but if not, you may need to revert to playing in the Classic Environment for those levels in which you experience crashes.
