He probably made his (or payed for) a simple Java Script or something familiar that works kinda like page view counters. Java Script is not hard to learn actually and there are also bunch of sites that give you free java scripts.

But well like i said, he "probably" used javascript, i am not sure thou.. it could be PHP or something else...
