: The crater you're referring to was created when a comet (or asteroid, don't

Aye. There are a number of similarities between Marathon and 2001: A Space Odyssey. Apart from the obvious Tycho reference there is the final M2 screen which is very similar to the opening scene of the film. Then there is the whole premise of the 2001 story of man becoming übermensch which is very similar to the Marine's journey in Marathon.

Most bizarre in my mind though is this subtle connection. In 2001 mankind could only discover the second monolith on the moon after it achieved space flight. In other words it had to reach a certain level of technological advancement to reach the next stage in development. Now picture the map writing on Greg Kirkpatrick's level Never Burn Money "JJARRO WERE AT TAU CETI". This is the only connection between PID and Marathon in the game. We could only discover this once we created a map editor. Thus we had to reach a certain level of technological advancement to make that connection.

The map writings were discovered on 24 Feb 95 shortly after the release of Mia (the first map editor). But by some bizarre twist of fate no one made the connection between "JJARRO WERE AT TAU CETI" and the Jjaro in PID. We had to wait until the release of M2 before the penny dropped.

So much for übermensch.

Did Greg Kirkpatrick plan this little test?

Cheers
Hamish
