: That wasn't "late aughts". (And, bluntly, I don't recommend that
: one as it discards the dream levels--along with at least one normal-level
: terminal that leads to them--and makes a number of unsupported
: assumptions.)
: The closest I can think of the kind of "essay" ArgoMarrus was
: asking about might be a Tour of Duty. And while this still isn't late
: aughts, my friend Hokuto did a play-along of the entire Marathon Trilogy
: on Dreamwidth back in 2015 .
Something that caught my eye in those write ups:
"Also of interest: Leela sends a message to Earth warning them about the Pfhor at light speed which she says will take ninety-two years to arrive. Tau Ceti - is only about twelve light-years away from us... So, uh, what's up with that? Did she miscalculate? Or is she lying about how far away Earth is in case the Pfhor read this message? Or is the Marathon's messaging technology just really bad? Well, we can't solve this mystery just yet, so we'll be off to Engineering to rescue some fellow security and try to come up with a cunning plan to defeat the Pfhor!"
The new "Marathon" game is going to be set in 2893. They must have got the message.
