AIs and slavery

A passing thought, the likes of which I recall has been touched on before: why is there a market for slaves in a space-faring galactic civilization that really ought to have robots that are better-suited for that kind of thing?
What if the answer is that all races out there have either experimented with AI themselves or know people who have done so, to disastrous results: namely, rampancy. So nobody trusts automatons above a certain dumb level of intelligence, and they turn to slaves in lieu of them.
