: I'm 100% with you on that.

: Sadly, I think the era of epic, long form single player campaigns are over -
: they're just not financially viable from a studios perspective.
: Developing a MP game costs less, takes far less time to make, and keeps
: eyeballs on screens for much longer than any SP campaign. Drop some new
: maps and cosmetics in an online store to keep things fresh, and maybe even
: charge for network access as well, and - tada - they've got a steady cash
: flow going.

: Bungie has been doing the "live service" thing since Halo
: 2/bungie.net days, I don't think they'll ever go back at this point.

I know I'm late to the party, but id Software managed to revive Doom with 2016's Doom 4 without needing to turn it into a crappy live service or Call of Duty clone like they originally planned to.

Boomer Shooters like Marathon also made a comeback beforehand with the Rise of the Triad remake & Shadow Warrior reboot and more came after Doom 4 such as DUSK, Ion Maiden, Phantom Fury (as of next year), Doom Eternal and The Citadel, just to name a few.

There is a market for this stuff and while a lot of it is indie dev focused, Doom & the modern Wolfenstein games showed "AAA" developers can indeed do it too. It's just that many of them, Bungie included choose not to.

My ideal Marathon revival would be Bungie doing what Doom 4 & Doom Eternal did, but putting their own spin on it to show them up like the Trilogy did for vanilla Doom, instead of merely copying them.

Looter shooters or "live service" games are not the answer. It would be like:

Duke Nukem copying Halo and pretty much everything else

Quake or Unreal coming back as a multiplayer only arena shooter ala Team Fortress

or Metal Gear as survival horror.
