In Response To: Marathon's Narrative, Arthur C. Clarke, Jo-Ha-Kyu (UrsusArctos)

: That being said, I've been thinking of the way each of the three Marathon
: games is structured. The ending of Marathon doesn't necessarily tie in to
: the start of Marathon 2: Durandal since it appears that the Security
: Officer is left behind in the original ending, but has been taken aboard
: Boomer at the start of the second game.

Not strictly true. At the very end of Marathon you experience a teleport out affect. In the Marathon Official Strategy Guide Interview Jason Jones remarked:

And Marathon's ending really does leave a lot of room for something else to happen. I don't know how many people noticed this, but the very last thing that happens to the player in Marathon is that he is teleported off the last level to where? Maybe someday we'll take advantage of this.

Marathon 2 was already well in development at this stage. If you watch the Inside Mac Games interview with Alexander Seropian and Jason Jones (Jan/Feb 1995) you will note that Jason let slip that that there would be a 'second game'. This was months before Bungie actually officially announced Marathon 2.

:Likewise, the final screen of
: Marathon 2 is at odds with the starting of Marathon Infinity.

Agreed. Marathon Infinity was never designed to be a sequel to Marathon 2. Marathon 3 was. Sadly we don't know what the plot treated was. There are some clues about a rogue star and another ruined world, far from the galactic core.

Marathon Infinity was hampered by a low budget and an initially short development timeline. It was original designed to use only the Marathon 2 assets. So essentially a scenario.

Hats off the Greg Kirkpatrick and the Double Aught crew for creating a genuinely intriguing Joycean-like experience. So that even after 25 years we are still trying to understand it.

Cheers
Hamish
