Sidestepping

Just curious, has anyone ever commented on the fact that the player can actually sidestep faster than he can move forward or backward? I've never seen this brought up on the story page, so far as I remember. Not a doctor or scientist of any kind, but one thing I do know is that it's impossible to speed up, over time, while changing directions. Jjaro technology?
