I have many fond memories of watching Dad play Descent II (tried playing it myself once, at an age when I wasn't really ready to handle FPSes or flight combat games); he's also got the first game, but if I watched him play that as well, I couldn't tell it apart from II. III, he didn't like as much for being "too non-linear" and having gigantic maps.
Errant Signal discussed how Descent is easier to play with dual-analog controllers; hardly a world-shattering thought here, but those are kinda like the direct next step up from Ye Olde Joysticks, aren't they.
