He isn't preparing. He just implies that he's willing to in order to kill Durandal. And in this timeline it seems well within Tycho's time constraints to kill Durandal before the S'pht'kr join the battle.
In a story with so much uncertainty I try to avoid making assumptions. The fewer assumptions the better. In this case, your conclusion may seem reasonable, but it relies on a lot of assumptions, the primary being what the main character thinks and knows. He just witnessed a timeline where Tycho warned the Pfhor *against* using the tri xeem, and he hasn't seen (as far as we know) any timelines that show what happens when Tycho interacts with Thoth or the S'pht'kr. It's a big leap to assume he knows what will happen from this point on in the timeline with enough confidence to initiate a time shift. You are assuming that the main character at this point in the story has the same understanding of what's going on as you do at the point that you've beaten it.
One thing we can confirm is that everything revolves around the W'rkncacnter being released. Marathon 2, Infinity's manual story, and the Prologue all end with the tri xeem detonating the sun under very different circumstances. The latter two also end with the W'rkncacnter being released. So, I think the more reasonable assumption is that the time shifts are triggered once the W'rkncacnter is released, since that's the fulcrum of the whole plot.
However, it would be boring and time consuming for Double Aught to show all the intervening levels (like if a movie showed you an entire plane flight a character takes, rather than just cutting between establishing shots) so they probably felt it was easier to imply what happens in between.
