In Response To: Evolution in Game Mechanics (Tim "Mordeir" Branin)

I'd say the biggest innovations have been in procedural generation and simulating systems. I recently played Arena, made in, what, 1994-95? I was quite impressed by the limitless possibilities of procedural generation. You can see how this innovation has developed in Animal Crossing a decade later, and Spore a decade after that.

These might not be "games," per se, but I'm getting a kick out of some universe simulations.
