The words "firmly" and "established" should never be used together in the same sentence about Marathon. ;)
There is no canon on the subject. All we do know is that Wasp and Looker are the official names.
They are not referred to in any of the Terminal science/debriefing reports so it is unlikely that they are a Pfhor clan or an enslaved race.
The Hunter did have a Hound but it never got used in the final game. I guess you could call that a pet of sorts. So it is conceivable that they had other creatures as 'working' pets. They can access areas that the Pfhor could not. There is at least one Marathon level designed to show the Wasps doing this.
