backgrounds is what you need to do

if backgrounds are hard for you or you don't like to make them, maybe you just need practice

IMHO, the easiest thing to do would be to put your characters close to a wall, so you only have to do shadows, maybe some texture on the wall.

I was gonna suggest making your characters do something, with action, not just standing there. With a background XP
