: I knew ahead of time that there were a bunch of bad endings; what I
: didn't learn for a while was where the chapter splits were or how to
: avoid said bad endings.

Actually, each Chapter in Eternal, I discovered, follows a simple 10-level mathematical pattern. In the context of the first Chapter, it looks like this:

01) Deja Vu All Over Again - Normal
02) Septococcal Pfhoryngitis - Normal
03) Dysmentria - Normal

04) Sakhmet Rising - Branch Level
05) Unwired - Failure Timeline
06) Roots And Radicals - Failure Timeline
07) The Tangent Universe - Failure Timeline

08) Core Done Blew - Good Branch
09) Heart of Fusion - Good Branch
10) To Sleep Perchance To Dream - Good Branch

The first three levels of a given Chapter are normal, and have no particular relationship to 'good' timelines or 'failure' timelines. The fourth level of a Chapter is a 'branch' level, where you have to choose to enter either the 'failed' timeline or the 'good' timeline. If you take the wrong exit, the next three levels will be part of the 'failed' timeline, with the third of those being the iconic copy-paste failure level that eventually will end up with all the Banshees in it.

If you take the 'correct' exit from the branch level, you end up skipping the three 'failure' levels and going to the three 'good' levels. The third 'good' level is another copy-past level, this time the one with the giant rock formations you have to jump around in.

This same pattern applies to every Chapter: three normal levels, one branch level, three failure levels, three good levels. Basically, a simple rule to keep in mind is that for the first three levels of a Chapter, you can play as you normally would. On the fourth level of a Chapter, though, make sure you take the less obvious path and don't let yourself get sent to the 'failure' timeline.

Sorry if I just killed the magic of Eternal, but it seemed like a relevant piece of information. :P

Vale,
Perseus
