Maybe it gives the crew a pretty albeit dangerous fountain course to look at as well as there being no other space for it to run. Deimos isn't very big compared to Mars or Earth, being a moon and all so they need to flood the rock somewhere so it can get back to the reactor and heat source. It just has to be cooled somewhat without slowing down or freezing completely to the crew don't get TOZT'ed when skipping pebbles (assuming they built biodome groves) and roasting bangers and marshmallows.

They might also put extra turbines (asbestos or platinum) over lava falls to generate pyroelectric power.
