Oh. Yeah, it's possible for the airship to move quickly enough that chunks don't have time to load until you're right on the edge of them. This can even happen in first person view, and I think it happens more often on the map-- first the data gets to the client to render the player view, and then the map gets it. At least, that is how it looks to me when I play. A chunk you've never visited before doesn't display on the map (because it doesn't yet exist).
