In Response To: Re: Beta 3 Testing (was: Aleph One 1.1b3) (Godot)

: I am 'guessing' from your response that you don't really know this level
: very well.

: The trigger for the two door trap is nowhere in the line of sight of the
: large room. A map editor will show you this.

No, I am painfully familiar with this level, but not on a map editor basis.

: There is no berserking going on.

This illustrates my basic point, there is no berserking going on in the way you play it. Not everyone will play a map the exact same way as anyone else.

: There is no 'secondary' corridor use. I would never get caught in a dead
: end like that. The standard approach to this level, is once you trigger
: the trap you run back the way you came. Once in open space you can
: fight better.

There are any number of ways I have played this area over the years. For example:

-- One way, after first carefully clearing out the blue projectile fighter and visible Compiler, is to activate/punch/tease the pair of staff Fighters hanging out with the cloaked Compiler and then back off once they get going. Very often one of the staff Fighters will get bored and key open the first monster closet (this is true in the original and the current beta), and this kills the sandwich trap. This makes triggering the second trap a much safer activity.

-- Alternately, if the Pfhor staff fighters did not do me a solid, then the next most obvious option is to equip the Alien Weapon from the secret alcove if I am vidding, or something with more punch if I am not, head down the corridor, turn around right before the trigger point, and then carefully back up until I hear the monster closets activate. I then sprint back the way I came and hose down the occupants of the first closet. If I am not vidding, I might use a flamethrower, or a rocket launcher, or a series of AR grenade combos, whatever. Once the first closet is disposed of, I run past it, turn around and hose down the Fighters and Enforcers coming from the second closet, along with the staff Fighters from the branching corridor, as they bottleneck in the bend of the main corridor. If I am vidding this level, then I will grab a dropped Alien Weapon after my secret alcove one is empty and continue my hosing. My primary goal in all of this is to take down the Enforcers as quickly as possible. Any critters left over can be punched or shot depending on my shields and level of boredom -- sometimes you just get tired of punching shit.

Regarding berserk Pfhor and unwanted Compiler activation, starting from the point where the Enforcers from the second closest start to fire at my back as I am charging the first closet, and up to and including to the point where I spin around and return fire, is where random berserk Pfhor can occur from the stray Enforcer and projectile Fighter fire.

Also, one thing I have noticed since my last post about this, is if I do get lucky and successfully tease a staff fighter into opening the first trap, while I am firing from the trigger point, and bottlenecking the Fighters and Enforcers as they try to leave the second trap, is all this activity right in front of the throne room will very often cause the throne room critters to activate and so cause the Compiler's to rise up into the corridor.

-- Another approach, is what I call the My Gun's Bigger Than Your Gun approach (A.K.A. The Noobinator Technique). I have, in the past, run down the corridor with a SPNKR equipped and as the traps trigger, I blast the Pfhor trying to exit the second closet, switch to my flamethrower, turn down the side corridor, burn down the staff fighters, run to the back of the corridor, turn, and then AR grenade combo everything that piles into the corridor (which will always include the throne room compilers) until I am ankle deep in yellow, gooey Pfhor guts. This is not my current preferred approach, but the ultra violence and extreme carnage that results is really very satisfying.

Again, this makes my point that everyone will play a map differently. No, just because you would not put yourself in a dead-end like this does not prevent another player from doing so. Really, unless I just wanted to blow off some steam during a full play through, this would not be my first choice approach to this area either, but the great thing about Marathon, and all Bungie games for that matter, is they lend themselves to a multitude of approaches to the simple task of getting from point A to point B and doing so with your head still attached to your shoulders. There is no standard way to play any map of any game Bungie and their associated friends have made.

I think the larger point to keep in mind is the importance of having multiple beta testers for any work in progress, and the importance that those beta testers not all have the same play style. Otherwise, if everyone testing is playing every map in the same "standard" way, they will both discover and miss the exact same bugs and flaws, and that is just crappy testing.
