In Response To: Re: Random Placement Test (Godot)

: Not sure if this helps but there just doesn't appear to be the same variation
: in placement in Aleph One as in the original game.

Here's the saved object listing from Couch Fishing:

6x saved objects
trooper in polygon 232
saved object
trooper in polygon 238
7x saved objects
trooper in polygon 168
17x saved objects
trooper in polygon 86
trooper in polygon 17
trooper in polygon 105
92x saved objects

There are 130 saved objects on the map. So the chances to drop the first trooper are:
polygon 232: 76.0% (on the ledge in the northwest room)
polygon 238: 1.5% (on the floor in the northwest room)
polygon 168: 6.1% (on the ledge in the southeast room)
polygon 86: 13.8% (switch 1)
polygon 17: 0.7% (switch 2)
polygon 105; 0.7% (switch 3)

Now, once one slot is filled, if it is picked again Aleph One will use the next one down. This makes it extremely tedious to calculate the probabilities of troopers at each switch. It's easy to see that having the first four slots filled (resulting in only one trooper guarding the switches, at switch 1) should be by far the most common outcome.

Unlike in Marathon, it's trivial to do 100 runs in Aleph One and print out trooper locations:
111100: 89
110110: 5
111001: 2
111010: 1
101110: 1
100111: 1
110101: 1

A second 100 runs:
111100: 88
110110: 5
111001: 2
101110: 2
110101: 1
100111: 1
101101: 1

It's also possible to find 10 game runs in the Aleph One data that look like yours:
110110
111100
111100
111100
110110
111100
111001
110110
111100
111100

Of course, they're surrounded by big areas of 111100s. The question is, are yours? Are there nine other forumsgoers who can repeat your test? Is there one forumsgoer who is crazy enough to fill out all 1296 leaves in the 6-ary probability tree diagram?

It's possible to fix Aleph One's placement algorithm to be truly random. Would that be too much variety?
