In Response To: Tour of Duty - Fire! Fire! Fire! Fire! Fire! (PerseusSpartacus)

: But lava ? Really? They had to
: include lava?

: Did somebody at Bungie ever point out that lava in the real world can reach
: 700° to 1200° Celsius (1292° to 2192° Fahrenheit), and that as such it can
: instantly burn a hole through your hand, no matter what you're wearing?
: Imagine what it does to metal, even metal in the 28th Century! Honestly,
: the lava thing feels like a kid's game. Sorry, Jason, I know the result is
: fun gameplay-wise, but you could've picked something better, like gasoline
: or nuclear fuel or something. This is sci-fi, for crying out loud - we pay
: attention to details here and are willing to accept odd stuff! I mean,
: for instance, Rubicon got rid of lava and instead made... tar? And it
: worked. Bungie couldn't even do that? Seriously? Maybe I'm a little unfair
: to them, but come on! If Jason ever really sinned in the process of making
: Marathon, it was when he programmed the lava.

This complaint about lava is a silly. I know that to a degree you were being deliberately silly, but I'm going to respond as though you were being completely serious for fun and to explore the idea of "lava" in Marathon.

First, it's a complaint about the realism of lava in a game where star monsters swing balls of energy from their crystal staves. Marathon is not the real world so, like you said, we are willing to accept odd stuff and the "lava" should be one of them.

Secondly, the "lava" doesn't touch the metal of the Security Officers suit until the shields are down and then you die instantly. In Marathon you're wearing a power suit which exudes an energy shield that protects you from things like bullets and hot molten substances. It's like the MasterChief's shields in Halo.

Thirdly, you are indeed being unfair. Fire, or "lava", is instantly recognizable as being dangerous as opposed to gasoline (which isn't actually harmful when you walk through it) or nuclear fuel. If Bungie had used nuclear fuel you would just be complaining, "Why isn't everything radioactive? Why isn't everyone on the Marathon dying of radiation poisoning?" You mention tar and I think that's worse; why can you walk/swim through it, you should be sinking in that thick goop and getting perfectly preserved for anthropologists of the future. The point is that other options wouldn't be much better.

Fourthly, it's placement might not be ridiculous. We don't start seeing "lava" until late in the game after the Pfhor have damaged physical structures aboard the Marathon as well as deactivating the AIs that control the Marathon's systems. It may have spilled from other areas while the Marathon was being damaged, or it might have overflowed when there were no AIs to regulate its circulation, or it might have deliberately been rerouted to unusual places by a certain AI who likes doing that sort of thing.

Fifth, and most importantly, IT'S NOT LAVA. The UESC is not an active volcano. There is no lava anywhere inside of it. So your scientific criticisms of the "lava" are invalid. That stuff could be anything from some sort of space fuel, to industrial byproduct, to molten metal, to who knows what. The rules by which it functions are dependent entirely on the decisions of Bungie.
