That's fine. You're supposed to use Preferences > Environment to select those files, which you obviously did. Now, I am a little confused; what do you mean 'blanks'? Do you mean like as in the file didn't show up in your Preferences, or do you mean like you couldn't see an explosion? (I would assume the latter, but I want to make sure we're clear about what the problem is.)

Um, what's an SVN?
Also, in regards to whether you should use the 'old' or 'new' directions, just look at the folder the Aleph One application is in. Does it have all of its files located in the same folder, or do you have to use 'Show Package Contents' to find the files the game runs off of (Shapes, Sounds, etc.)? If you have to look inside the actual application to find the files, then use the 'new' directions. If you can find the files in the same folder as the application, use the 'old' directions.
