It does in the original Marathon. It works in Habe Quiddam with the Alien Energy Convertor since the level is set to 'retrieval' and the AEG is designated as 'to be retrieved'. It must appear in your inventory to successfully complete this level. Dancing around it on the lava, without picking it up, won't cut it. ;)
It doesn't work on Cool Fusion because the level is not designated as 'retrieval'. A simple human error. I'm guessing it got overlooked during beta testing because all the beta testers grabbed the Fusion Pistol. And why wouldn't they... 99.99% of people probably would. :)

: retrieve the fusion pistol would be to make a tiny polygon that the fusion
: pistol would be in and have it set as "Must Be Explored," making
: the mission exploration.
This would be an alternative work around, if required.
