As painful as it was, it was also intensely exhilarating to survive, and once you get the gravitonic blades it's pretty bearable. Not to mention the narrative impact of an unending, overwhelming onslaught of impossible creatures seemed appropriate, as otherwise the W'rkcacnter has no actual presence.
