That sounds good to me. I didn't really mind the way things looked, but there was one level where trying to find where I was supposed to go next was extremely frustrating because I was constantly being attacked. I think I stopped on that level and never started again. Obviously, things need to stay very dangerous, but having safer areas and no infinite respawns might help a lot.
