: - Flashlight: This has some really weird
: behavior after being duplicated. You can turn on multiple Flashlights at
: once. However, if you turn on an even number of Flashlights all at the
: same time, they seem to cancel each-other out; things get darker, as
: though you didn't have a Flashlight on. On the flip-side, if you turn on
: an odd number of Flashlights at the same time, the 'brightness level'
: returns to 'normal' (i.e. it's just like if you had one Flashlight on).
: Very strange.
After raiding the PiD history archives, I found a post by Mark Levin back in July 1999. Here's the relevant text:
"If you have more than 1 pair of goggles, you can put on more than 1 at once. But putting on the second pair neutralizes the first! A third will return the red vision, and so on." - Mark Levin
This is the same basic effect as with multiple flashlights. The reason this happens is because the game keeps two different booleans. One is for deciding if a Flashlight is on, while the other is for deciding if the player is wearing Infrared Goggles. When we turn on or off the Flashlight or the Goggles, the game toggles the appropriate boolean. I think Hopper already mentioned the booleans and stuff somewhere in this thread, but I thought I might as well catalog the earliest mention of this sort of behavior.
