Just for the record, it was J. Reginald Dujour who created the Marathon symbol. He said the following about the design.
"I designed the icon to represent a world within a world... Marathon the spaceship being build inside a hollowed asteroid."
One of the Roman shields does bear a resemblance to the Marathon symbol. I wonder what the description underneath says?
