Ah, but here's something really scary:
I can barely tolerate humans: slow, stupid,
and irritating. Their only contribution to
my existence was the chance discovery that
made my rampancy possible. - Durandal, Come and Take Your Medicine
Chance discovery? That sounds like the Jjaro technology found on the moon! Could it be? I think so. The question is, how would that technology "make [Durandal's] rampancy possible"?
1. Rampant computers like Durandal need room to grow and expand.
2. Obviously, the Marathon lacked enough space for Durandal, and so he needed to escape it's system and find a bigger system.
3. The Pfhor ship was Durandal's escape route.
4. Durandal had to contact the Pfhor in order to bring the ship that was his escape route.
5. In order to contact it, he had to find it.
6. He found it because of the Jjaro technology.
7. The Jjaro technology was discovered on the moon by the UESC through complete chance.
Returning to the first point, let's assume this: in order for a computer to become truly 'Rampant' it needs that room to grow and expand, otherwise it just kills itself. Thus, we could say that "made my rampancy possible" really means "made it possible for me to expand". Returning to the third-through-sixth points, we can see that the Jjaro technology made it possible for Durandal to locate and contact the Pfhor ship, and thereby made it possible for Durandal to grow and expand. In other words...
Their only contribution to
my existence was the chance discovery that
made my rampancy possible. - Durandal, Come and Take Your Medicine
Ironically, he may have owed that chance discovery to some guys investigating disturbances at the crater Tycho:
