To amplify: A Martian year is 686.971 Earth days. 12 Martian years before 8/5/12 would be 1/9/1990 (give or take a day depending on time zone). The news about Curiosity might make one perform the calculation to compute their age in Martian years. Discovering that it came out an exact number of years might count as a "Surprise Birthday".

A denizen of the Marathon might consider himself "Martian".
