Is that an eBook cover? I've noticed that some publishers are using abstract covers for eBooks rather than the original hardcopy print covers. I presume this is to reduce the cost. Re-usuing the artwork may incur a royalty fee to the original artist. I would imagine the profit margin on eBooks is so tight that one way to save money is on covers.

Using abstract covers rather than professionally drawn and painted covers isn't a new phenomenon.

Back in 70s I tried to get my hands on Isaac Asimov's Foundation Trilogy. I could only lay my hands on the Panther publications from the late 60s. While I loved the writing the covers of this series always use to bug me.

I wanted something a little more than a random amorphous blob.

Of course these abstract covers are now considered classics for their time.
