On that matter, I will make a bit of an exception. For instance, if a character gets shot in the arm, you could say something like 'He looked over to where the pain was coming from, but he couldn't see his arm. Then he realized something; it was missing.' Just don't describe the blood or parts of stuff left over. That would be too much.

P.S. Have you started writing your short story yet?
