While I haven't tested it myself, I strongly suspect that "damage inflicted" is calculated from the "shots hit" of each weapon. That would explain the full-value-of-every-hit, and the exclusion of crystals. The only other documented candidate is the monster body count, and that wouldn't exhibit those behaviors. The player-state data is only partially documented, but if there were a separate field for storing damage dished out, somebody would surely have found it.

I could cheat myself a nice marksman's status and try it, or finish dumping item locations. Or catch up on that pesky day job. Decisions, decisions.
