In Response To: Re: Gnop! and the beginnings of Bungie (MrM12LRV)

: It seems like Gnop! began in 1990 and was finished in 1991. I guess the order
: of events you posted is a bit incorrect. That's pretty interesting.

Actually, I believe the order of events is correct. There is definitely proof that the name, “Bungie”, existed before the completion of Gnop.

Earliest found copyright:
Gnop, version 0.4 ßeta, October 23, 1990 ©1990 Bungie Software

Last modification of Gnop (final additions, tweaks, etc):

It seems that Bungie didn't officially start as a company until 1991. The wording on bungie.net seems to follow the Marathon Scrapbook, but upon closer inspection, it actually differs slightly...

Bungie's History [bungie.net]:
“Bungie began as a company one crisp morning in May of 1991, but that wasn't exactly the beginning. Before it emerged, fully formed as the multinational corporate behemoth that published Operation: Desert Storm [...] "Bungie" released a Pong clone [...] called Gnop!”

Notice:
“[...] but that wasn't exactly the beginning.”

Also, notice the quotation marks around the word “Bungie”. This suggests that Bungie wasn't official yet (maybe):
“"Bungie" released a Pong clone [...] called Gnop!”

Marathon Scrapbook:
“It all started with PONG. Well, a ripoff of PONG anyway.

It was 1991 and Alexander Seropian was in his basement apartment
[...]
Alex Dropped his cereal bowl in the sink, jogged down to the campus bookstore and skulked up to the register with a copy of Think C. He returned home to his Macintosh, determined to do whatever was necessary to become a one-man wrecking crew in the software industry, He agonized over what he would name his company, finally settling on “Bungie” because “it sounded fun.”
[...]
Alex distributed GNOP! as shareware via online services and the Internet. [...] Encouraged, Alex set about writing his next project: Operation: Desert Storm.

...

I can't find the Gnop copyright information, but I did find some stuff on Operation: Desert Storm:

Operation : Desert Storm.

April 4 1991? Now we're getting somewhere! It doesn't meet up perfectly, but, perhaps Seropian registered/copyrighted O:DS, but, didn't actually release it until he had “officially” started Bungie...

“Bungie began as a company one crisp morning in May of 1991, but that wasn't exactly the beginning. Before it emerged, fully formed as the multinational corporate behemoth that published Operation: Desert Storm...”
