In Response To: ALAC issue with QT 2.0 (Godot)

: One issue has arisen which I can't understand. Both AIFFs are the about the
: same size (13.4 vs 13.5 MBs) and the bit rate is identical (1411 kbps).

: However when I convert these to ALAC in iTunes the following happens:
: Flippant QT2.0 ALAC is 7.8 MBs and the bit rate is 802 kbps.
: Flippant QT2.5 ALAC is 4.9MBs and the bit rate is 510 kbps.

: Given the nature of the music I think 510 kbps is more accurate.

: Could Audacity be adding the extra, probably unnecessary, kbps? Anyone have
: any advice on the best way to set this up for recording?

AIFF and WAV are basically PCM (Pulse Coded Modulation) with a brief header. Basically, it's raw audio. Multiple CD quality audio tracks of the same length should be the same size.

The bit rate of compressed audio indicates how much information is required to encode it. For lossy compression this is usually a good indication of the quality; more is better. For lossless, it's purely an indication of how efficient the compression was.

In this case, it means the 2.0 audio contained more information and couldn't be compressed as well.
