Hmm, that's different. The importance of the knife always made me think of it as being Durandal in a sense. It's not a sword, of course, appears to be a pocket knife, but it just always felt right to me. Not sure if I had any more to go on than that.
That would certainly be odd, though, if the player was navigating through Durandal's dreams.
On the occasion when I took this more literally, it seemed to me to be a memory from a previous life of the player, perhaps before his augmentation. This may have been after playing Rubicon, and the men in black suits made me think of the player's captivity in some sort of lab.
