Thanks. You will find many allusions/similarities between Marathon and many of the great sci-fi works. Bungie have admitted to this. I think Dan Simmons may even have been listed as one of their inspirations. In Hyperion after the Earth is destroyed Tau Ceti becomes the centre for the Hegemony of Man. The Time Tombs, mysterious ancient artifacts, have a definite Jjaro feel to them.

While not a Bungie creation, the Devlin in Marathon Evil is very similar to the Shrike in Hyperion (in my opinion anyway). The Shrike is composed of razorwire, thorns, blades, all manner of cutting edges, basically a bladed killing machine. Interestingly, Frigidman modeled the Devlin on the Armageddon Beast, an alien eventually dropped from Marathon.
